Mini blinds come in many different forms and sizes. Despite this, their installation is similar across the board. In this post I will walk you through measuring your window to find the matching size mini blind to installing it yourself. With the proper guidance this project can be completed in 30 minutes. This post is for the installation of cordless mini blinds.

Here is a list of the tools you will need to complete this project:

  1. tape measure
  2. pencil
  3. power drill with Phillips driver bit
  4. drill bit (size 5/64)
  5. step stool

(Pro Tip) Borrowing any of these tools from a friend or family member is a good cost saving option if you don’t own them yourself. Otherwise, Home Depot or Lowe’s carries them in store. If you do need to buy these tools, all of them except the step ladder can be found in the hardware department in either store. The step stools are usually an aisle or two over from the hardware department in either store.

Now that you have a list of the tools needed, it’s time to measure your window. Windows come in many different sizes. Therefore, there are many sizes of mini blinds ranging from 18″ to 72″ wide and heights from 36″ to 72″. More than likely, your window will fall within these size ranges so there is no need to worry. If you cant reach the window, use the step stool to measure the inside dimension of the window from left to right. Jot that measurement down, then measure the window height, from top to bottom. With these measurements written down, you’re now ready to take a trip to your local hardware store.

(Pro tip) If you plan to go to a Home Depot or Lowe’s, you can go online to search the inventory of the store closest to you to make sure they have your size mini blind in stock.

Once you’ve purchased the mini blind, it’s time to install! Here are the 5 steps to follow for help installing mini blinds on a window:

Step 1: Unboxing

Remove the contents of the cordless mini blind package and locate the hardware pack. It will usually contain various sizes of screws, end caps for the blinds, mounting brackets, and hold down brackets (if you usually keep your blinds down and want to hook the bottom rail of the blinds in place then install these. Otherwise, they’re not necessary).

Step 2: Marking Screw Hole Locations

Take the mounting brackets and position one on the inside of the window frame at the top. Choose either the right or left side to start. Holding it in place, mark with a pencil the screw hole locations. Do this on the other end of the window as well. Two screws per bracket are sufficient.

Step 3: Predrilling Screw Holes

Predrill the locations you marked with a 5/64 drill bit, going about a 1/2″ into the wood frame. (Pro Tip) To ensure an accurate drill depth into the window frame, take a 1″ long piece of tape and position the drill bit in the center of the tape. Fold the tape over the center of the drill bit and as you drill the tape will act as a depth gauge.

Step 4: Installing The Mounting Brackets

Once you’ve pre-drilled the 4 screw holes, take your drill and the provided screws and screw in the mounting brackets.

Step 5: Attaching Headrail & Testing

Take the headrail, which is the top part of the mini blind and the slats connected to it and snap it into the mounting brackets. From there, loop the wand through the eyehook attached to the headrail. Pop on the endcaps on the headrail. Test for proper operation by raising and lowering the blinds and using the wand to open and close the slats. Once you confirm everything is working properly, congratulations, you have installed your mini blinds successfully!
